Listening to the Mission - Ft Irwin

March 12th, 2026

During improvements at the Fort Irwin Military Police K-9 facility, the Defender team identified a way to preserve a meaningful concrete tribute containing paw prints from the installation’s former working dogs. Through thoughtful field coordination, the team adjusted the generator installation plan at no cost or schedule impact, ensuring the tribute and the history behind it remain part of the facility.

How a Small Field Adjustment Preserved a Lasting Tribute to the Installation’s K-9 Partners

Every project is an opportunity to deliver more than construction. It is an opportunity to listen, understand the mission, and support the people who rely on these facilities every day. A recent project at Fort Irwin reminded us why that mindset matters.

Our team is currently supporting improvements at the Fort Irwin Military Police K-9 facility. The scope includes civil work, relocating fencing, and installing a new backup generator that will provide reliable power to the building and its operations.

While on site, our team learned that the K-9 program at Fort Irwin had recently been defunded and the working dogs reassigned to installations across the country. For the officers who trained and worked alongside these dogs for years, their absence was deeply felt. These animals were not just part of the mission; they were part of the unit’s identity and family.

During design and layout coordination, our team identified an existing concrete pad that needed to be modified to support the generator installation. Embedded in that concrete were paw prints from many of the dogs that had once trained there. Over time, the pad had become a meaningful tribute to their service.

Walter Richards, Superintendent at Fort Irwin, recognized the significance of this space and led the effort to preserve it. Working with the field team and trade partners, he helped drive an in-field, no-cost solution that rerouted the conduit path and adjusted the generator pad layout so the existing “paw pad” could remain in place.

The adjustment required thoughtful coordination but resulted in no additional cost or schedule impact to the Government. More importantly, it ensured that a meaningful part of the unit’s history and connection to their K-9 partners would remain.

In the grand scheme of construction, the change was small. The impact, however, was significant. The officers were deeply appreciative that their voices were heard and that their tribute could remain intact.

Moments like these reflect the culture of our Fort Irwin team and the values that guide our work across every project. We are proud of Walter and the entire team for staying attuned to what matters most to the client, the user, and the mission they serve.
